Flushing Water Lines: March 11th - 15th 2024

Calendar Date:
Monday, March 11, 2024 (All day) to Friday, March 15, 2024 (All day)

Why does the City flush the water lines?  The city's water (which has naturally occurring high sedimentation) has some areas in town where water sits in the pipes for long periods of time, like dead ends of pipe.  These are areas where sediment tends to gather.  By flushing all the water lines twice a year (dead end lines get flushed 4 times a year), we are following and exceeding the states guidelines for a healthy water system, by flushing out the sediments that are trapped in the piping system.  We are also able to check water flows and water pressure as we flush lines through town. This is to pro-actively identify other potential problems in the water distribution system.  Flushing involves going to fire hydrants, blow-offs and other designated flushing points  in all neighborhoods, and running the water out at high velocity. You will usually see large amounts of water moving down the street when this activity takes place in your neighborhood.

If you have any questions about the process of flushing the water lines, please contact us at City Hall, at 541-995-6655.  We'd be happy to explain the process to you.

The City flushes all the City water lines in Spring and again in the Fall.  When the Public Works Crew is flushing nearby or in your neighborhood, you'll find your water pressure will be reduced for a short period of time.  Because flushing the water lines has a tendency to stir up sedimentation, it's a best practice to flush out your hot water heater, other water using appliances and your faucets soon after the flushing process has been completed.  Its also a good idea to refrain from using large amounts of water, washing whites or light colored clothing on all flushing days
