Law Enforcement Services in Harrisburg:
The City of Harrisburg pays $279,200 on an annual basis for law enforcement services. $261,657 is paid to the Linn County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), which provides the City with 275 hours a month/3300 hours a year, for law enforcement services over and above what is provided to other areas in Linn County. The City also pays $30,000 a year to the Coburg Police, that provides 35 hours a month/420 hours a year of traffic enforcement, code enforcement and court bailiff services. LCSO provides the main crime prevention/enforcement services for the City, and dispatch or 911 should always be used anytime a citizen has an issue to report or an emergency. Coburg Police work traffic and code enforcement for the City. Our crime stats in Harrisburg are better than those in our surrounding areas, showing that the additional funds we pay for our law enforcement services are paying for themselves. The City reviews crime statistics on a quarterly basis; this information is available in the City Council agendas for citizens to review.
In addition, LCSO provides the City with monthly reports. This provides citizens and the City Council with information about the types of services that are provided by Linn County Deputies, including general locations and crimes that are committed. No actual addresses are used, nor are any names, other than those who are actually arrested by LCSO, or who are convicted of crimes. You can find reports by clicking on the embedded pages below.
The City Council established a Law Enforcement Ad Hoc Committee at the end of 2021, which put together a budget with real numbers to find out what it would take for Harrisburg to have it's own police department. There is a lot of value in having contracts for our law enforcement services. (Actual costs for providing our own police department is in excess of $625,000 a year, would only provide us with 2 officers, and would still require a contract for additional law enforcement services for adequate coverage).
Neighborhood Watch Program:
Harrisburg has an active Neighborhood Watch program, in need of more new members! Neighborhood Watch is an organization that has been proven to reduce crime and is supported by the Linn County Sheriff.
